Russell A. Melius

Russell A. Melius, age 86, of Adell, WI, passed away Wednesday, October 9th at the home of his daughter Luan Leibham. He was born March 23, 1927, to Albert and Viola Melius in the town of Scott. He served his country during WWII in the United States Army stationed in Panama. While there, Russell was recruited to play on an elite traveling baseball team representing the United States Army. On June 5, 1948, Russell married Merley Ellen Peter of Adell. The couple has resided in the town of Scott their entire lives. He worked for Geidel Brothers Construction after returning home from the war. In 1959, he went to work for the Sheboygan County Highway Department. Russell dedicated the next thirty years of his life to public service, retiring as a Patrol Superintendent. Russell served on the Town of Scott Board as a Town Clerk and Supervisor for twenty years. He was instrumental in developing the Town of Scott Road Maintenance Department. He served on the Board of Directors and President of The State Bank of Cascade. He was an active member of Zion United Methodist Church in Batavia where he served on numerous committees and devoted his entire life to the church. Russell enjoyed spending time with his family, the great outdoors, hunting, trapping, fishing, and his John Deere tractor. Many afternoons were spent taking money from his family and friends playing card and dice games, such as Sheepshead, Euchre, and 31. He loved to play and watch baseball and softball at the local diamonds. He could often be found there cheering on his family and friends. Capping off his softball career, he pitched the Batavia Athletic Association co-ed softball team to a championship at the ripe old age of 75 (while playing in his golf spikes!). Survivors include his loving wife of 65 years Merley, daughter Luan Leibham, one son-in-law Mark Leibham, only grandchild Lottie (Troy) Schill, and great granddaughter Ellysa Schill. Other survivors include his four sisters: Audrey Clyatt of Jeffersonville, IN; Delphine Hartmann of Fredonia, WI; Margie (Stella) Peter of Plymouth, WI; and Dottie Reinhardt of Plymouth, WI. He is further survived by one brother-in-law Walter Hetzel of Beaumont, CA and sister-in-law Bernice Melius of Batavia, WI. There were many significant people in his life who called him Grandpa: Kristina Fisher, Clint Chilcott, Lauren Braaksma, Emily Gluck and Madeline Gluck. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, mother and father in law, two brothers, two sisters, one sister-in-law, and five brother-in-laws. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 12th at 2:00 P.M. at Zion United Methodist Church in Batavia, WI. Rev. Gail Mitchell, pastor of the church will officiate. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held at CHURCH from 11:00 A.M. on Saturday morning until the service begins at 2:00 P.M. In lieu of flowers, a memorial is being established in Russell's name. The Suchon Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Plymouth is serving his family.
