Obituary for Alyce A. Giffin

Alyce A. Giffin, age 96, of Plymouth, passed away peacefully on Saturday April 1, 2017, at Terrace Place in Sheboygan.

She was born on March 10, 1921, in Brown County WI, a daughter of the late Joseph and Anne (Jaklin) Bogdon.

Alyce attended grade school at West Eaton School and graduated from East Green Bay High School at age 16. She received her teaching license at Door Kewaunee Normal School and began teaching at age 18. She taught at Dyers School in Mitchell, teaching grades 1 – 4 and taught at West Eaton School during World War II.

On November 20, 1941, she married Stuart M. Giffin at St. Matthews Church in Allouez. Stuart and Alyce moved to Plymouth WI in 1957.

Alyce renewed her teaching license, and obtained her BA degree from Marion College in Fond du Lac WI and taught 1st and 2nd grades at Fairview and Parkview schools in Plymouth, retiring in 1983. Her husband, Stuart, preceded her in death on May 25, 2003.

She loved to travel, visiting all 50 states and many countries. She took many cruises to the Caribbean visiting Jamaica and many of the islands. Alyce and Stuart loved Las Vegas and wintered there 17 years. At 85, Alyce traveled to Antarctica.

Alyce was an avid reader belonging to several book discussion groups. She was also a great believer in education and encouraged her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren to follow their dreams and work hard to achieve them. Alyce and Stuart sponsor a legacy scholarship at Plymouth High School.

In retirement she volunteered at St. Vincent De Paul, Plymouth Senior Center, Plymouth Art Center and St. John the Baptist Church.

She was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Daughters of Isabella, Christian Women at SJB, S.C.A.R.T.A, Generational Center and Christian Women of Sheboygan. She played bingo and 500 at the Generation Center.

Alyce loved children and crocheted many caps and afghans for Safe Harbor House of Peace in Milwaukee and St. John the Baptist Catholic School in Plymouth.

She was a generous, kind mother who was a wonderful role model for her children. Alyce (and Stuart) will be remembered for their unquestioned support of their children, and their engagement in seeing them succeed. She was a woman of many interests and she worked hard to enjoy them.

Survivors include her children: Nancy Camber of Iola, Mary (Terry) Krall of Slinger, Stuart J. (Judy) Giffin of Sartell, MN, and Jeffrey (Kathi) Giffin of Kohler; Eleven grandchildren: Jill (Brad) Davidson of Sun Prairie, Steven (Lara) Camber of Neenah, Patrick (Kelly) Camber of Appleton, Scott (Christine) Krall of Onalaska, Matthew (Mickie) Krall of Madison, David (Stella) Krall of Madison, Leah (Matt) Knutson of Hudson, Joel Giffin (Carrie Washington) of Minneapolis, MN, Amanda Giffin of Cedar Grove, Evan Giffin of Minneapolis, MN, and Molly Giffin of Minneapolis, MN.
She is further survived by Twelve great-grandchildren: Kaley and Gavin Camber of Neenah, Bridget and Erin Davidson of Sun Prairie, Sean and Ryan Camber of Appleton,Giffin and Ian Krall of Onalaska, Henry Krall of Madison, and Bennett, Charlotte, and Everett Knutson of Hudson; One sister: Lenore Parker of Marion, NC; and One brother: Glen (Sue) Bogdon of Milwaukee

She was preceded in death by her husband, Stuart; her son-in-law, Lawrence Camber; her parents; one granddaughter, Abigail Giffin; and one sister, Clarice.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held for Alyce on Tuesday (April 4, 2017) at 12 Noon at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Plymouth. Fr. Dennis Van Beek will officiate. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
Friends may call at the CHURCH on Tuesday (April 4) from 11:00 A.M. until the time of services.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Stuart and Alyce Giffin Scholarship at Plymouth High School are suggested.

Alyce’s family is grateful for the kindness and compassion from the staff at Terrace Place Assisted Living in Sheboygan and the Sharon S. Richardson Hospice Staff and N.O.D.A volunteers.

“When I’m gone,look for me in the clouds that drift across the sunrise of a winter sky. Feel my presence in the mist that rises from the river bottom on a spring morning and when the grass is green, and the smell of the hay is strong and sweet, Look for me.”
