Obituary for Cornelius Van de Pas

Cornelius (Casey) Van de Pas, 94, of Plymouth, joined his beloved wife Martha in eternal life on November 14, 2017.

He was born October 4, 1923, on the Van de Pas family farm in S’heerenhoek, Zeeland, the Netherlands. He spent his boyhood in the Great Depression. He witnessed hardship and oppression firsthand, living in Occupied Holland during World War II and surviving the “Hunger Winter of 1944.” After the war, Casey worked to rebuild his family farm and community. He then worked in Canada for several years, saving toward his future dreams.

Returning to the Netherlands, Casey married Martha Luykx on Nov. 22, 1955, in Woensdrecht, Holland. The newlywed couple started their life journey together by immigrating to the United States. They initially settled in Kiel, Wisconsin, until they could buy a farm. Cornelius worked at Lake to Lake Dairy and Kohler Co. until he was able to pursue his passion of farming full time. He resided on the farm he loved on Willow Road near Plymouth, Wisconsin, for 55 years. Casey continued to be active on the farm into his nineties.

Casey became a naturalized United States citizen in 1971. He was an usher at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Plymouth for many years, as well as a member of the Knights of Columbus # 1789. He was a charter member of the Lakeshore Two Cylinder Club.

Casey loved spending his winters with his daughter and family in Santa Barbara, California. Not one to sit idle, while in California, he took up woodworking and built handcrafted live edge tables and beautifully restored old horse carriages and vintage travel trailers.

Poppa took great pride in the activities and accomplishments of his children and grandchildren.
His wife Martha preceded him in death in 1975.

His surviving family include: His children: Hubert (Sara) Van de Pas of Kiel, Jules (Maggie) Van de Pas of Highlands Ranch, Co., LuAnne (Stewart) Abercrombie of Santa Barbara, Ca., and John (Michele) Van de Pas of Plymouth; Grandchildren: Marike Van de Pas of Plymouth, Lucienne (Mike) Fels of Sturgeon Bay, Grace Van de Pas of Fort Collins, Co., Thomas Van de Pas of Denver, Co., Juliana Ozur of Santa Barbara, Ca., and Ben Van de Pas of Plymouth; and Special Nephew: Peter Luykx of Sheboygan.

He is also survived by a sister, nieces, nephews and other relatives in the Netherlands. He left behind many friends in Wisconsin and California.

We will celebrate Cornelius’s life with a Mass of Christian Burial on Monday, November 20, 2017 at 6:00 P.M. at St. John the Baptist Church in Plymouth. Father Dennis Van Beek will officiate. Burial will be in the Parish cemetery.

Friends may call at the CHURCH on Monday (Nov. 20) from 4:00 P.M. until the time of Mass.

In lieu of flowers, the family request that any donations be made to the Knights of Columbus Unwed Mothers Project or to Sharon Richardson Hospice.

The family extends its gratitude to the staff and residents of the Waterford in Plymouth and the Sharon Richardson Hospice. They are truly a blessing to our community.
