Obituary for Edward Charles Maes

Edward (Ed) Charles Maes, age 89 of Plymouth, WI, passed away early Sunday morning
(Feb. 18, 2018) surrounded by his loving family at the Sharon Richardson Community Hospice in Sheboygan Falls.

Edward was born on August 7, 1928 in Niagara WI, son of the late Charles and Amelia (Zadra) Maes. Following graduation from Niagara High School, he enlisted in the Naval Air Corp in June 1946 and served on the USS Coral Sea aircraft carrier from 1946 to 1948. After serving his country, Edward attended Marquette University, gaining a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in Accounting and Taxation.

It was Ed's love of ski jumping that brought him together with his bride, Sharon Graefe. Sharon was a spectator at a ski jumping tournament in Iron Mountain MI when she saw Ed jump for the first time. Later that afternoon they bumped into each other, and Ed asked Sharon to join him at the dance that evening. Following a short engagement, Ed and Sharon were married on November 26, 1955 in Milwaukee WI at the Church of Gesu (on the Marquette University campus). Through the years they resided in Milwaukee, Wausau, Madison, Plymouth and spent much of their retirement in Ruskin FL.

After graduating from Marquette Ed was employed by CPA firms as an auditor for the first 6 years of his career. Following this his career took him to Plymouth where he joined Gilson Brothers Company where he stayed for 30 years and was their Controller and Treasurer. He retired from Gilson in 1989 and subsequently started his own accounting/tax business, which he continued working at until 2013. Ed was involved in many organizations, including Beta Alpha Psi Honorary Accounting Fraternity, Plymouth Jaycees, Lion's Club (treasurer) for 27 years, and Central Ski Association - Class A ski jumper (10 years; 1948 - 1958).

Throughout Ed’s lifetime, family was of great importance to him. He enjoyed spending time at various family gatherings with his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Sharon and Ed shared many memories of dancing, skiing, golfing, and travelling to the casinos throughout the years. Ed also loved listening to a variety of live bands with Sharon, and telling wonderful stories of “the good old days” to friends and family.

Edward was preceded in death by an infant brother, his parents, and his sister Elaine.

He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years: Sharon of Plymouth; 5 daughters: Deborah (Jim) Dickens of Plymouth, Denise (Patrick) Winarski of Metairie LA, Kristine (Tom, Jr.) Schmidt of Batavia IL, Karen (Brian) Worden of Middleton WI, and Mary (Joe, Sr.) Grunewald of Sheboygan WI; and 13 wonderful grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Ed is also survived by other relatives and many friends.

Memorial Services will be held on Friday afternoon (Feb. 23, 2018) at 3:00 PM at the Suchon Funeral Home in Plymouth. Father Wayne Bittner will officiate. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held on Friday (Feb. 23) from 1:00 PM until the time of services.
