Obituary for Harold Nick

Harold W. Nick, age 88, of Plymouth, WI, passed away early Wednesday afternoon (August 9, 2017) at Sharon S. Richardson Community Hospice Center.

He was born on April 27, 1929 in Sheboygan, WI, son of the late William and Dora (Wunsch) Nick.

Harold attended Sheboygan Grade School and graduated from Sheboygan North High School in 1947. He also attended Lakeshore Technical College and Relator School.

On July 18, 1951, he married the love of his life, Eleanor Brendel in Howards Grove at Trinity Lutheran Church. The couple resided in Howards Grove for 65 years; in 2016 they moved to Plymouth to be closer to family.

Harold served in the Korean War as a Private of the U.S. Army from 1951-1953. Harold’s fondest memory came when his grandson, Ryan Luedke, escorted him on the Old Glory Honor Flight. He was a member of the Howards Grove VFW Local 9924.

Harold was a butcher for over 40 years at the Bensman’s Grocery Store in Sheboygan, specializing in his homemade bratwurst. He then worked for Johnsonville Meats for 18 years, after his retirement from Johnsonville; he continued to work part-time for the Howards Grove Piggly Wiggly as a meat cutter for 8 years.

Harold was a faithful member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Howards Grove. He served as an elder, usher, Sunday School Teacher, and Sunday School Superintendent for 25 years. He also directed the Children’s Jr. Choir and was a member of the church choir. Harold was known for singing solos and duets in church, especially on Christmas Eve with a version of Silent Night in German. He also was a greeter and financial secretary for the church for 25 years.

Harold’s joy was singing, he was a member of the Plymouth Barbershop Chorus for 48 years, singing baritone. He was the pitch piper and was active in many quartets. On January 14, 2008, he was awarded the Sole Survivor Award for Barbershop Music. Harold also sang for numerous weddings. Even after his health began to fail, Harold would still sing a barbershop tune, or a favorite polka.

He also served as the Assessor for the Village of Howards Grove and was involved with the street naming in the Village.

Harold loved playing golf and bowling, he was in many leagues in both sports. He loved football, basketball and baseball. He was a huge fan of the Chicago Cubs, Green Bay Packers, Milwaukee Brewers, and Milwaukee Bucks.

He enjoyed the outdoors, gardening, canning, sitting outside on summer nights with neighbors, and spending time with his children and grandchildren. He never turned down a good card game of Sheepshead or cribbage. He also enjoyed working for the Sheboygan County Fair as a ticket seller at gate 6 and working the beer stand at the races.

Survivors include his loving wife; Eleanor of Plymouth; three children; Linda (Warren) Luedke of Plymouth, Ricky (Melanie) Nick of Plymouth, Jody (Bruce) Tveit of Chilton; eight grandchildren: Ryan (Lace) Luedke of Menasha, Travis Luedke (companion: Jenny) of Plymouth, Heidi Nick (companion: Preston) of Denver, CO, Dana (Joe) Schmidt of Kiel, Rachel Nick (companion: Jeremy) of Elkhart Lake, Paige (Zachary) Voelker of Brookfield, Joshua Johnson of Brookfield, Brooke Johnson of Chilton; Step-grandchild: Charlie (Nicole) Tveit of Aberdeen, SD; five great-grandchildren: Jax and Breckan Luedke of Menasha, Chelsea, Blake, and Mason Schmidt of Kiel; four step-great-grandchildren: Chris, Cymbria, Adisyn, and Owen Tveit of Aberdeen, SD; and one sister-in-law: Edna Bender of Howards Grove.

Also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Proceeded in death by his parents: William and Dora Nick; granddaughter: Kristin Luedke; sister: Betty (Ernest) Huber, sisters-in-law: Hildegard (Richard) Sachse, Laverne (Henry) Reiss; and Brothers-in-law: Harvey (Sadie) Brendel and Gilbert (Carolyn) Brendel.

Funeral Services will be held on Monday evening (August 14, 2017) at 7:00 P.M. at Suchon Funeral Home in Plymouth. Pastor Darrel Bergelin, Pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church in Howards Grove will officiate. Cremation will take place following the services.

Visitation will be held on Monday evening (Aug. 14) at the Suchon Funeral Home from 4:00 P.M. on Monday until the time of services.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund is being established in Harold’s name.

The Plymouth VFW World Cheese Center Post # 5612 will conduct military rites at the Suchon Funeral Home following the services.
