He worked for various machine and tool and die shops during his life, and was most recently employed as a machinist at Gen Mac Corporation in Sheboygan.

Jim was first married to Toni Foral in 1987. In 1996, he married Laurie (Sprangers) Schwartzer. Jim and Laurie have one daughter, Hailey. In 2013 he was united in marriage to Janell De Smidt (nee Johnson).

Jim loved NASCAR and was a huge Matt Kenseth fan. He also loved his Dewalt tools, Harley Davidson motorcycles, playing on his drums, and going to local ranges to shoot guns with his friends. He was a master at building, renovating, and fixing almost anything that crossed his path. His talents allowed him to completely renovate his first home in Sheboygan, and he was a key member of a Habitat for Humanity build team in Sheboygan.
