Obituary for Stuart W. Sweeney

Stuart W. “Bud” Sweeney, age 94, of Plymouth, passed away on Saturday, January 28, 2017, at Froedtert Hospital in Milwaukee.
He was born in Oshkosh, WI on April 13, 1922, son of the late Vincent and Ella (Schoenfeld) Sweeney.
He graduated from Plymouth High School in 1940.
Bud enlisted in the Army Air Corps on November 24, 1940. He was stationed at Wheeler Field in Hawaii at the time of the Pearl Harbor attack. He spent four years in the South Pacific during World War II and his last combat was on the island of Saipan. Bud was discharged at Fort Lewis, Washington in 1945.
On August 29, 1953, he married Patricia Irish in Plymouth. The couple resided in California for several years before moving back to Plymouth where they farmed for 25 years. He then worked at Curt Joa until he retired at age 71. Pat preceded him in death on February 6, 2015.
He was a member at Salem United Church of Christ in Plymouth. Bud was a lifetime member of the Ladewig-Zinkgraf American Legion Post 243 of Plymouth, serving as commander for 3 years. He also belonged to the VFW, Pearl Harbor Survivors Association, EAA, Elks Club, War Birds, and Quit Qui Oc Men’s Club.
He enjoyed flying as a private pilot, playing golf, and spending time with family and friends.
He is survived by: Four children: John (Joy) Sweeney of Hartford and his family: Mike (Haley) Sweeney of Oconomowoc, Matthew Sweeney of Waukesha, Teresa (Ben) Neureuther of Hartford, Mary (Nick) Strub of Johnson Creek, Dan Sweeney of Waukesha and Joe Sweeney of Hartford; Steve Sweeney (Special friend: Christine) of Sheboygan and his family: Liz (Neil) Peterson of Plover, Patrick Sweeney of Oshkosh, Ryan Sweeney of Sheboygan and Jenna Sweeney of Sheboygan Falls; Cathy (Dean) Schiavone of Cupertino, CA and her family: Tom Schiavone serving in the United States Army, Mary Schiavone of Los Angeles, CA. and Aileen Schiavone of Cupertino, CA; and Carol (Lawrence) Shaffield of Dothan, Alabama and her family: Mairead Shaffield of Dothan, AL and Jack Shaffield serving as a U.S. Merchant Marine. Eleven great grandchildren: Logan, Brooklyn, Gwen, Henry, Aaron, Sam, Lauren, Oliver, Isadora, Ella, and Adalyn.
He was preceded in death by his wife Pat, his parents, and infant sister: Ellen.
Memorial Services will be held on Wednesday (February 1, 2017) at 3:00 P.M. at Salem United Church of Christ, 217 Salem Dr. Plymouth, WI, 53073. Rev. James Hoppert, pastor of the church will officiate. Cremation has taken place.
The Ladewig-Zinkgraf American Legion Post # 243 of Plymouth will conduct military rites at the Church following the services.
Relatives and friends are asked to gather at 2:30 P.M. at the CHURCH on Wednesday for services. PLEASE NO FLOWERS, instead please give to the memorial fund established in Bud’s name for The Ladewig-Zinkgraf American Legion Post #243 of Plymouth.
