Ana Maria Pages, formerly a resident of Plymouth, WI, former Chief Interpreter of the Inter-American Development Bank and a brilliant linguist, died suddenly on Sunday, June 24, 2018 at Sibley Hospital.
She was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina on May 22, 1932, daughter of Camilo Pages, an Argentine citizen and Dorothy Knauer, a native of Wisconsin.
Ana Maria graduated from Miami University of Ohio in 1955 and later from Georgetown University’s Graduate School of Interpretation in 1957.
She joined the Inter-American Development Bank at its inception in 1961 after working at the OAS and various international conferences.
A famous assignment was interpreting Fidel Castro’s histrionics into English at a contentious OAS 1959 Conference in Buenos Aires.
She was known for her love of opera at the Met and for adventurous travels to Antarctica and the Galapagos.
Throughout her life, she generously supported humanitarian aid for the Marshall Islands in the Pacific and other charities, and most recently for Syrian refugee relief in Amman, Jordan.
Ana Maria is not survived by any immediate family members, but she is survived by many extended family members and dear friends.
A graveside prayer service will be held on Saturday (September 29, 2018) at 11:00 A.M. at Union Cemetery (located on Division St.) in Plymouth. Rev. Rae Ann Beebe will officiate.
